Melbourne fringe festival internship

The Melbourne Fringe Festival offers a variety of internships from ‘arts management, marketing, partnerships, publicity, exhibitions, communication and various production roles’. More Info

This style of program, again, differs from what the RAV Creative Leadership Program is able to offer, in that the Melbourne Fringe internships requires a minimum of four months dedication to the program. What we can take from this style of program, however, is the value of a hands on learning environment where practical industry related skills are developed. We intend to implement these opportunities within the 9 day program through, lectures from industry leaders, a two day immersion in industry and the opportunity to devise an arts related project.

An additional benefit of the Fringe internships is that connections are made and established within the extended duration of the program. The RAV Creative Leadership Program could attempt to cater for these needs and opportunities of the participants through establishing a method of protracted contact and involvement post the 9 day intensive. As previously mentioned this format of contact could be achieved through a dedicated website, facebook or intermittent meetings. Ideally, in the post stages of the program, participants would be kept in the loop regarding internship and volunteer opportunities, arts events and experience in both their local community and in Melbourne and provide links with potential employers.

RAF acquittals

The Creative Leadership Program remains in a holding period, with little to be complete until after the application deadline (14th October).

So this week I assisted in processing Quick Response Grant acquittals. RAV is responsible for distributing a range of funding including that from the Regional Arts Fund. Applicants apply for, carry out programs or creative pursuits and then at the conclusion report back to RAV on the use of the funding in the form of an acquittal. My role this week was to process these acquittals through the use of a grant management system used by RAV, ensuring that expenditure and income budget sheets balanced, report back on audience participation numbers and outcomes from the projects.

This process was really insightful from two perspectives. It firstly allowed an insight into the processes for applying for, correct usage and acquittal processes for funding. Secondly it enabled me to become familiar with yet another program and system that is used within the arts industries, a skill set that should be ever expanding.

FREEZA

FReeZA attracts over 140,000 young people each year to events that take place in safe, fully supervised, drug, alcohol and smoke-free venues across the Victoria.

Through funding provided by the Office for Youth, FReeZA presents you with the opportunity to become a part of a local FReeZA committee to plan and deliver these events. FReeZA offers you the chance to develop a broad range of skills and the opportunity to stage events for other young people in your local community.

The Creative Leadership program is currently in a holding period as we wait for more application to enable us to better tailor the nine day intensive program to the specific participants. FCAC Young curators program

FCAC is in it’s first year of running their Young Curators program, which was offered to a select seven participants whom all started with the program in March 2011. The program requires all participants to work collaboratively to curate an annual program of exhibitions and events at The Basement Lounge at FCAC. The program is design to mentor the participants throughout the year, helping them to develop skills and contacts within the industry.

This program has similar intentions and outcomes as RAV’s Creative Leadership Program, however it differs in it’s duration. The Creative Leadership Program is much shorter and more intensive in it’s focus over the nine days.

Logistics

In our fortnight Creative Leadership meeting, we determined a plan of action for the coming months and the associated project deliverables. My tasks for the rest of August (ie today and next Tuesday) is to write upin a spreadsheet the action plan, secure accommodation for the 12 participants and organise a conference room for the 9 days.

I generated a spreadsheet that compared a while range of budget accommodation that was available in the CBD. It was decided that the best option was to tap into the Melbourne university colleges as their rooms are often rented out over the summer to public groups. After phoning various colleges, I determined that Queen proposed the best value for money in terms of pricing structure and facilities offered. Staying at Queens will not only offer the students a great location in terms of accessibility to icon Melbourne food hubs such a Lygon St and a perfect proximity to the city, but will also give them a taste of university and college life if they choose to follow a university pathway. It is intended that this will put them in the mindset of thinking towards the future and what directions they want to follow.

I also go in touch with a RAV industry contact that is able to offer a venue free of charge for the 9 days to use as a base/lecture conference room. However the room will not be equipped with computer which the students will require during the time, so I am also sourcing possible laptop hire.

YO Bendigo

Youth Online Bendigo (YO Bendigo) is a collaborative site between Bendigo Youth Development and Bendigo Senior Secondary College Community Service Students, that provides a directory and links to what is going on in the community, specifically in relation to the interests of youth. The site keeps you updated on things happening in art, theatre, film, literature, music, dance, sport, clubs, youth groups, volunteering and clubs. Anyone is able to upload to the site through a submissions form on the web and as such a broad range of events and happenings are promoted. This site is a great example of what RAV could offer the young arts leaders who are involved in the program, once the nine day intensive is over. More recently there has been discussions in office and team meetings that it is a shame that we will only be connected with the selected young people for nine days. Having a website that raised awareness of events, jobs and seminars that were happening could be a great way to ensure that the participants stay connected and reap more from the program.

A day of contacting organisations

Today was a day of calling the compiled organisation list to check if they had received the marketing information about the program we had sent via email. This functioned essentially as a push to make the organisations actually respond to the email and furthermore, promote the program to the youth in their community. As this is the first year the program has run, it is also the most difficult year for raising awareness around the program and getting as many applications for the program as possible. The large majority of the organisations were really responsive and thought the program was a really great idea. This was reassuring that those organisation would actively promote the opportunity and that the program itself is likely to be a success!

Case Study – Melbourne Theatre Company

Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) initiated an ambassadors program last year and following it’ssuccess has decided to call for applications again in 2011. MTC accepts 25 year 11 students to spend 8 months behind the scenes in their theatre productions. The program includes seeing an MTC theatre production once a month, followed by a group discussion and critique. MTC involves a diverse range of industry professionals to speak candidly with the students about various professions within theatre.

The Program makes a special effort to interest boys in theatre, and to explore areas of theatre other than acting, such as writing and design. All students are encouraged to act as representatives for MTC and to report back to their community and school about their experiences.

The program, above all, is a rare opportunity for young people with a passion for theatre, to gain an unrivaled insight into the career paths and opportunities associated with theatre.

RAV’s most recent project, the Creative Leadership Program, seeks to provide a similar, however much more broad and intensive experience of the arts and more specifically arts management. The program is designed to capture students just before they enter university degrees, to highlight the validity and range of engaging roles they can pursue within the arts. The highly successful nature of MTC’s ambassador program, highlights the validity and likely success for RAV’s program.

Peer Evaluation

The morning’s focus was to continue on with the marketing task of sourcing who could potentially promote our program and finalising organisations contact details into an excel spread sheet that will essentially form a readily available database for bulk mail outs of promotional material and expression of interest forms etc. Í have found it interesting (already, in the 3 days that I have been at RAV) to have worked across a broad range of areas including project developement, communications and marketing. I feel it is placing me in an ideal position of awareness, revealing all the components and processes associated with getting a project off the ground. The compiled list is in the below spreadsheet:

In the morning I also attending an all staff meeting, which provided me with a greater insight of the various projects and focuses of the organisation. It was also a great way to become more familar with the staff.

The afternoon also featured a meeting, however this time it was specifically regarding the Creative leadership program. During this time the EOI guidelines (which I had created the week previous) were reviewed, a prime example of industry peer evaluation within the workforce. Below I have attached the revised EOI guidelines. The text in red refers to changes to structure/grammar/phrasing and the text in blue refers to details that were finalised in the meeting, which I later updated.
